How the calculator works

Concentration

peptide ÷ liquid

Total peptide divided by liquid volume gives the concentration per mL.

Volume

target ÷ concentration

The target mass divided by concentration gives the liquid volume.

Syringe units

volume × 100

For insulin units, 100 units equals 1 mL, so mL is multiplied by 100.

Worked example: A 5 mg vial plus 2 mL liquid creates a 2.5 mg/mL concentration. A 250 mcg target amount equals 0.1 mL, or 10 insulin units. The vial contains 20 such portions.

Why the water matters

Every concentration on this site is a vial’s labelled milligrams divided by a volume of diluent. Medibact supplies that diluent as Bacteriostatic Water for Injection, USP — sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol in a 30 mL multi-dose vial, produced in an FDA-registered U.S. facility. The preservative is what lets a vial be entered more than once, which is why the arithmetic on these pages assumes it.

Frequently asked questions

What does reconstituting a peptide mean?

Research peptides are supplied as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder. Reconstitution is dissolving that powder in a measured volume of liquid, usually bacteriostatic water, so the vial becomes a solution with a known concentration. The concentration is what makes a syringe reading meaningful.

How is the concentration worked out?

Vial amount divided by the volume of water added. A 5 mg vial with 2 mL of bacteriostatic water is 2.5 mg/mL. Every calculator on this site runs that one division, then converts an amount you enter into a volume (amount ÷ concentration) and into syringe units (volume × 100 on a U-100 syringe).

How many units is 1 mL on an insulin syringe?

On a U-100 insulin syringe, 1 mL is 100 units and one unit is 0.01 mL. The syringe measures liquid volume, not peptide, so the same 10-unit mark holds a different amount of peptide depending on how much water went into the vial.

Why bacteriostatic water rather than plain sterile water?

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water preserved with 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The preservative is what allows a multi-dose vial to be entered more than once; plain sterile water has no preservative and is intended for single use. The calculators work with any diluent volume — the choice of liquid is set by the protocol being followed.

Do the calculators recommend a dose?

No. They report concentration and syringe units from the figures you type in — vial size, water volume and the amount you choose. No preset on this site is a suggested amount, and nothing here is medical advice or an instruction to use any substance. Research use only.
